I am not going to promise the world, I just want to call out to a truly marginalized set of people in the housing issue. Dog Owners, actually homeless as well. I am sickened they go ignored.
I had a dog and held to a mold laden place for dear life because I had a Shep. Usually medium to large dogs are not allowed in Vancouver, we see a lot of dogs. Also a lot of dogs can’t find loving homes, guess why, it’s a statement from managers and land lords, “No Pets.”
A large dog protects your person and your step, which may make it a right under the rights and freedom act.
Personal Security. Just like a weapon. But much better with hugs, unless your Sledge Hammer.
But it’s true for the homeless too, many shelters do not allow them, and a lot of homeless people have very good dogs and always properly on a leash.
I feel lucky, my aunt rents me a better place now. But before that, who knows. Either sickened by spores for my dog, or possibly rent increased to the street, not wanting anything to do with a shelter that says “no dogs.”
Dogs do so much for us, especially in the worst of times. Those four legged heroes as well as their masters need to be recognized in any housing discussion. Possibly crime prevention too.
