Following Tim’s message earlier this week, we are planning to hold a convention in Edmonton the weekend of August 14th and 15th. This will be an opportunity to elect a new Leader, Deputy Leader, Board Members, and Ethics Committee members. We are also soliciting motions for updates to the Constitution, By-Laws, and Statement of Policy. This is your chance as members of the Libertarian Party of Canada to shape the direction of the party for the next few years. It is also your opportunity to come forward and run for an open position.
Convention Format
We are still working out the details for the format of the convention. Due to lockdown protocols, our original convention planned for 2020 was postponed. We were considering a completely virtual event earlier this year, but as restrictions started to be lifted, we decided to wait so we could hold it in-person. We realize some members would prefer not to travel, so we expect to offer a virtual option as well. We have a small venue booked right now—more details to come.
Request for Motions
Please review the Constitution, By-Laws, and Statement of Policy and send us your motions for anything you would like to see revised. Depending on the response, we may need to limit the number that will be brought to the floor. These will be due by July 11th so we can send them to the membership by July 15th. Send motions to president @ libertarian.ca.
Get Involved!
For elected positions, we would like to have the nominees determined well ahead of the convention date so people can promote themselves to the membership. Nominations will still be taken on the floor, but you are more likely to gain support the earlier you get your name out. We are developing the nomination and application process in the coming weeks. We will also share role descriptions so you understand the commitment level for each one. There will likely be some amendments proposed to the current structure of the party for the Board, Ethics, and Regional positions (Regional positions are not elected at convention).
Finally, I am also resigning as President of the party effective August 13th. I have been in this role since November 2017 and have had to carry a pretty heavy load at times. The party will benefit from someone with more time and energy to take us through a possible Fall election. Like Tim, I will still continue working with the party in some capacity. The President role will be filled by the new Board of Directors after the convention, so it is another one you may want to consider.
More to come over the next couple of weeks.
Thank You,
Coreen Corcoran
President,
